So that people can have hot water, quickly and on demand. Plus, if the water were piped from another source, it would take a huge amount of money to keep it hot all the way to your house.

March 3rd, 2009 at 5:05 am
Yes it’s one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of all time.Ive been wrestling with the problem for many years now and I haven’t been able to figure it out.
March 6th, 2009 at 11:08 am
Ideally they should be cold water heaters or simply water heaters.
March 7th, 2009 at 6:47 am
Actually the fact doesn’t make “me” think, though I’m sure some might.
What nags at me more is whjy so many call them “HOT water heaters.”
March 8th, 2009 at 11:50 am
Maybe because not all water heaters make water “hot”. Some just make warm water. At the other extreme you have boilers which make steam. Some water heaters simply keep water from freezing.
March 9th, 2009 at 2:47 pm
We don’t have Hot water heaters. We have water heaters or Hot water tanks.
March 12th, 2009 at 8:39 pm

March 14th, 2009 at 9:53 am
Definitely got your Stephen Fry head on today.
March 17th, 2009 at 9:30 pm
I would tend to agree with you… If the water is hot already why the need to heat it?
I this the actual term for the appliance is “Water Heater”.
Not “Hot Water Heater”
It has always been a pet peeve of mine. Similar to Garbage disposal.
Who puts garbage in their sink?
March 18th, 2009 at 1:34 am
I can’t believe the people that took the time to answer this.
March 19th, 2009 at 12:39 am
