I rent a gas hot water heater and I am having a serious problem with it. For some reason the temperature setting keeps turning itself up. About once a month I have to go dial it down. Now either my dog is moving the dial somehow or it is moving on its own.
In either case this is a very serious problem as I have a small child. Is there any sort of limiter device that can be installed that will prevent it from getting hotter than a safe temperature? Or should I just get the tank replaced, I assume I can just rent a different tank from the gas company. Any suggestions in what to look for in a new tank?
Thanks!
It is definitely moving. There are markings on the dial and there is a red one that is supposed to be "optimal" I always set it at that or one lower. This time because I hadn't adjusted it for awhile (Christmas being busy) it was at two over optimal.
There was literally steam coming off the sink full of water.
My husband swears it isn't him. And I doubt he would endanger his own child. And nobody else is here.
I think I will try duct tape, the gas company is a PITA to deal with.
And yes it is unbelievable, but it is also unbelievable that my dog would rub against it, only in one direction and not turn it all the way.

That’s wierd. Yes, I would tape it to stop if from moving and if somehow it keeps getting changed, then get a new one. If you are renting they should give you a new one. If the next one moves, I suggest you move. LOL.

Contact the company that supplied the water heater and explain the problem you are having. They can best explain what is going on and might just get you a heater that works correctly.
Best wishes

Does anyone else have access to the heater like spouse? in- laws, ex-spouse, neighbors? If you are renting it, call the company and have it replaced but If the dial is turning itself up I’ll lick my own kneecap!!
